and Preparation Electrogastrogram (EGG Test)
What
is the EGG test?
The EGG test is a measure of the stomachs electrical activity.
The EGG is like an EKS of the stomach.
What
preparation is required?
The patient should eat or drink nothing after midnight. Two
hours prior to the EGG test time, the patient should eat 2
pieces of dry toast and drink 6 oz of apple juice. Any pro
or anti- motility medications (see below) must be stopped
3-4 days prior to the schedule test. Dress comfortably with
the ability to expose the abdomen.
List
of drugs the patient must stop 72 hours before the EGG test:
- Reglan,
Propulsid, Domperidone, Matilin, Bethanechol, Erythromycin
- Narcotic
Drugs (Codiene, Demerol, Darvocet, Morphine, Percocet, Percodan)
- Calcium
Channel Blockers (Procardia)
- Compazine
- NSAIDS
(Relafen, Advil, etc.)
- Tricyclics
(Desipramine, Amitriptyline, Imipramine Notriptyline)
- Antispamotics
(Dicyclomine, Hyoscyamine, Robinol, Pamine, Donnotal, etc.)
- Miscellaneous
(Trazodone, Buspyrinone)
List
of drugs patients may continue:
- H2
Blockers (Zantac, Pepcid, Tagamet, Axid)
- PPIs
(Prilosec, Prevacid, Aciphex, Protonix, Nexium)
(For patients with diabetes, check morning glucose level
and take 50% smaller insulin dose if appropriate to do so)
On the
day of the scheduled test, the patient is to report to the
San Antonio Endoscopy Center located upstairs above the Datapoint
Location at least 15-20 minutes prior to scheduled exam to
register. Your Doctor’s Medical Assistant will specify
which location you are to report to.
What
should you expect during the procedure?
Three EKG type electrodes will be placed on your abdomen.
A 15-minute recording will be made. You will be asked to drink
water until you are full. Then, 30 more minutes of EGG is
recorded. After the test, you may resume your medications
and activities. Your doctor will receive a report within 10
working days.
