GCSA Doctors Win the Presidential Award from The American College of
Gastroenterology
The research team at GCSA (Gastroenterology Clinic of San Antonio) /GERSA led by Dr. Charles W. Randall and Dr. Carlo Taboada recently received the Presidential Award for the best paper presented at the annual meeting of The American College of Gastroenterology held in Honolulu, Hawaii, October 27-November 2, 2005. Their research showed that many patients with upper abdominal complaints such as fullness, bloating, nausea, burning, and pain n have motility disturbances of
their stomach. The technique known as electrogastrography (EGG) has been in use in their clinic for several years but few gastroenterologists are actually trained in its application. GCSA/GERSA doctors are the only doctors in central and south Texas using EGG and are among only a few clinics in the U.S. that are actually using EGG in their research. The results of their study showed that up to 97% of patients with these symptoms can be managed effectively by accurate diagnoses and medical treatment. Dr. Randall states, “For years patients having these symptoms but with a negative evaluation have been told by their physicians either to not worry about it, we don’t know what is causing your symptoms, or live with it. Now we have the ability to diagnose and effectively treat these patients”.
