GASTROENTEROLOGY RESEARCH OF SAN ANTONIO

GERSA had been a concept of Dr. Charles W. Randall since his days of fellowship training in the hallowed halls of Barnes Hospital at The Washington University Medical Center. It was his dream to bring state of the art clinical practice as well as clinical research to his home town of San Antonio. GERSA began with Dr. Randall doing clinical projects in the mid-1990s. Not long after his works were published and presented in prestigious venues such as Digestive Disease Week and The Annual Meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology he began receiving grants from pharmaceutical and equipment companies to do both investigator initiated studies as well as industry sponsored clinical drug trials. In 2000 Dr. Taboada joined him as a post-graduate research fellow and stayed on as a research associate and is now Director of Clinical Trials. The fledgling research unit became a division of the Gastroenterology Clinic of San Antonio that same year.

In 2005 the division became a separate entity when Dr. Gary Gossen, Dr. Bassem Mazloum, and Dr. Jorge Muñoz joined the team. Since its inception GERSA has 33 publications, 23 presentations at national meetings, grants from 6 sources for investigator initiated research, and has conducted nearly 40 trials in 6 years for 20 different companies. Topics of research have been board to cover areas of concern for gastrointestinal community and include gastroesphageal reflux disease, Barrett’s, non-reflux esophageal disease, motility disorders, peptic ulcers, GI oncology, endoscopic surgery and novel techniques, functional bowel disorders, inflammatory bowl diseases, malabsorption syndromes, microscopic colitis, capsule endoscopy and Helicobacter. Today GERSA boasts 8 physicians, a senior certified coordinator, marketing team, medical assistants, and ancillary support staff.
